The True Cost of Fashion: Honouring Nature and Ourselves Through Slow Fashion

Every year, millions of tons of clothing end up in landfills, much of it the result of Fast Fashion. But what does Fast Fashion really mean? And why is Slow Fashion the key to a more sustainable and purposeful future for both our clothes and our planet?

With this article, we want to invite you to explore the deep connection between the clothes we wear, the world we live in, and the ways we can live more consciously. We’ll show you how your choices as a consumer can create a ripple effect of positive change.

What is Fast Fashion?

Fast Fashion is a system designed to keep up with the rapidly shifting trends of today’s world. It’s all about speed, mass production, and constant consumption. Clothing is produced quickly, sold cheaply, and disposed of just as fast—often after just a few wears.

At first glance, it may seem harmless. After all, who doesn't love the thrill of a new outfit at an affordable price? But beneath the surface lies a much darker reality. The environmental and human cost of Fast Fashion is far higher than its price tag suggests.

Fast Fashion thrives on the exploitation of both people and resources. The industry produces garments in ways that harm the earth—using vast amounts of water, energy, and chemicals, often creating toxic waste that ends up polluting our soil, rivers, and oceans. More than that, it disconnects us from the very earth that nurtures us. It encourages us to view clothing as disposable, rather than something sacred—an extension of our human nature and a reflection of the world we live in.

When we fail to honor the earth through our choices, we also fail to honor ourselves.

What is Slow Fashion?

Slow Fashion is the antidote to the disconnection caused by Fast Fashion. It is not simply an alternative—it is a movement that seeks to realign us with nature, with the earth, and with the very essence of what it means to live in harmony with the world around us.

Slow Fashion is built on the principles of quality, sustainability, and fairness. It encourages us to cherish what we own, to care for our clothing as we would a precious gift, and to invest in pieces that are designed to last—not just for a season, but for years, if not decades. It’s about honoring the artisans who craft these pieces, the materials from which they are made, and the ecosystems that support their creation.

At LA LOBA, we embrace Slow Fashion not just as a concept, but as a way of being. In everything we create, we honor both the wildness within us and the wildness of the earth. Our mission is not only to design clothing that empowers women but also to ensure that every step of our process—from sourcing to production—is in alignment with the natural world. We believe that by honoring nature, we honor ourselves.

We are of the earth. And only when we respect and care for the planet—when we listen to its whispers and tend to its needs—can we truly respect ourselves and live our purpose. Slow Fashion is an invitation to return to that state of reverence. It is a gentle reminder that every piece of clothing we wear carries energy and intention, and that by choosing Slow Fashion, we are choosing to be in alignment with the planet’s rhythms, cycles, and gifts.

Why is Fast Fashion Dangerous?

The true danger of Fast Fashion lies in its devastating effects on the environment, the economy, and society.

1. Environmental Destruction:
The fashion industry is one of the largest polluters in the world. From the water-intensive processes required to grow cotton, to the toxic dyes that poison our water systems, to the synthetic fabrics that shed microplastics into our oceans—it is impossible to ignore the damage that Fast Fashion does to the planet. Fast Fashion encourages us to see clothing as something to discard when it's no longer "in fashion," which only deepens the waste and harm done to the earth.

We need to honor nature. Nature is not a resource to be exploited; it is a living, breathing force that sustains us. When we destroy the planet in the name of convenience, we sever our connection to it, and in doing so, we sever our connection to ourselves.

2. Exploitation of Workers:
Behind every cheap garment is a workforce that is often invisible, working under poor conditions for low wages. The workers in these factories are often subjected to unsafe environments, long hours, and little to no rights. Fast Fashion does not just harm the earth—it also exploits human beings, reducing them to mere cogs in a machine. It treats people like resources, rather than human beings deserving of dignity and respect.

3. The "Throwaway Society":
Fast Fashion feeds into a culture of overconsumption—a society that views clothing as disposable, to be discarded once it no longer feels "fresh" or "new." This mindset harms both the planet and our own sense of self-worth. When we treat the things we wear as temporary and insignificant, we forget their true value, and we forget that we, too, are connected to the earth.

Why Slow Fashion is the Solution

Slow Fashion offers us a beautiful way forward—a way to restore balance, to care for our planet, and to reconnect with our own sense of purpose.

At LA LOBA, we’ve built our brand around the vision of honoring the earth and the wild woman within each of us. From the very beginning, we have been committed to creating clothing that not only inspires but also leaves a positive mark on the world.

1. Positive Impact on the Planet:
We’ve chosen fabrics that are not only beautiful but also sustainable and circular. Our collection is made from 100% cotton and 100% cupro—both natural, recyclable fibers. Cotton is a well-known material, but cupro, a by-product of cotton production, is a sustainable and plant-based fabric that is vegan and cruelty-free. We are proud to say that by using non-mixed fabrics, we ensure that our pieces are 100% recyclable—a major milestone after months of sourcing the perfect materials.

2. Fair Labor Practices:
We work with a small family-owned production in Portugal, where we’ve personally visited to ensure that the working conditions meet our high standards. Our partners allow us to produce in small quantities, reducing the overproduction seen in traditional fashion, and ensuring that every item is made with care and purpose. We also ensure that all of our labels and tags are made from natural fibers and plant seed paper, which can be planted back into the earth to grow beautiful flowers.

3. Conscious Packaging and Shipping:
We make sure to package and ship our creations with the utmost mindfulness. Partnering with a women-led logistics company in Germany, we avoid single-use plastic and opt for recycled satin paper and paper packaging. Everything we use is natural, compostable, and designed with the planet in mind.

How You Can Make a Difference

As a consumer, you have the power to shape the world around you. Here are simple ways you can start making mindful choices:

1. Buy Less, Choose Wisely:
Before purchasing anything new, take a moment to consider whether it truly adds value to your life. Will you cherish it? Will it last? Will it align with your values? When you buy intentionally, you honor both yourself and the planet.

2. Choose Secondhand:
Vintage shopping is not only fun but also an incredible way to contribute to a circular economy. By buying secondhand, you’re reducing the demand for new resources, and you’re finding unique, beautiful pieces that have already lived a full life.

3. Repair and Upcycle:
Instead of throwing out clothes that need a little loving care, take the time to repair, alter, or upcycle them. This can be a deeply creative and fulfilling process, and it gives your clothes a new story to tell.

4. Support Ethical Brands:
Look for brands that are committed to transparency, sustainability, and fair labor practices. By supporting companies that align with your values, you are contributing to a shift towards a more ethical, sustainable fashion industry.

A Call to Honor the Earth

Fast Fashion may seem easy, but it comes at a high cost—one that we can no longer afford to ignore. Slow Fashion is a way to reawaken our connection to the earth, to honor the resources we use, and to show gratitude for the beautiful world that sustains us.

At LA LOBA, we are more than just a clothing label. We are a movement—a collective of wild women honoring the earth and embracing the beauty within and around us. By choosing Slow Fashion, you are choosing to live in harmony with nature. You are choosing to honor yourself, the planet, and the generations to come.

Together, we can create a more beautiful, more sustainable world. And it starts with us, right here, right now.
